The world needs steel from both sources
Steel is the backbone of society. Both iron sources – iron ore and recycled scrap - are needed in order to meet future demand.
Fossil-free steel and HYBRIT® technology
In 2021, SSAB produced the world’s first fossil-free steel as a proof of concept using HYBRIT® technology. The revolutionary steelmaking technology using hydrogen reduced sponge iron, removes the primary source of CO2 emissions with water as by-product , instead of CO2. Since then, a number of pilot deliveries have been made to customers in different industries. The steel has the same high quality and properties as traditional steel, but less impact on the planet.
When available in commercial volumes, the fossil carbon emissions in SSAB’s production of SSAB Fossil-free™ steel are targeted to be less than 0.05 kg CO2e/kg steel in Scope 1, 2 and for iron ore upstream Scope 3, of the GHG Protocol.

The steel industry is currently one of the highest carbon emitters, accounting for 7% of all emissions globally. While SSAB is already one of the world’s most efficient steelmakers, we know that the industry still has a long way to go. Our objective is to lead the steel industry to a decarbonized future.
Why should I buy steel made with no carbon emissions?
An investment in steel without carbon emissions adds value to your business by eliminating the carbon footprint in the steel part of your value chain. Apart from a large end-customer demand, it enables the SSAB's customers to become forerunners and take the leading position within their industries, offering products of superior quality and with a very low carbon footprint.
What is the difference between SSAB Zero™, SSAB Fossil-free™ steel and standard steel?
Both SSAB Zero™ and SSAB Fossil-free™, are steels with virtually zero fossil carbon emissions in SSAB operations. SSAB Zero™ is based on scrap. SSAB Fossil-free™ steel will be based on iron-ore produced without fossil emissions, using HYBRIT® technology. Independent of the raw material, to our knowledge, SSAB will have the lowest emission steel offering. SSAB Zero™ and SSAB Fossil-free™ steel will have the quality and properties.
