Smaller production sites and steel service centers are located around the world, such as a finishing line in Shanghai for customers in Asia, sales offices in Latin America for mining industry customers and steel service centers in the Baltic countries.

Borlänge Mill

Borlänge is located in Dalarna County, 200 km northwest of Stockholm, the Swedish capital. The city has a population of around 50,000 and is today home to heavy industry, a university, the head office of the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and many small companies. Almost everything is within walking distance, and the city offers a lot of outdoor and diverse cultural and recreational activities.

Interesting info

  • Start of strip production in Borlänge in 1889.

  • SSAB’s industrial site is located in downtown Borlänge

  • The Dal River flows through the industrial site, which has around 30 km of railroad track.

 

Hämeenlinna, Finland

Interesting info

  • SSAB’s Hämeenlinna site was built in the 1970s. Cold-rolled and galvanized strip production began in 1972 and tube production the following year. The manufacture of color-coated products began in 1977.
  • The Hämeenlinna site covers 54.6 hectares and has 7.8 km of railroad track.
  • Around 100 truckloads of products leave the site each day.

Hameenlinna Mill

Located 98 km north of Helsinki, the Finnish capital, at the junction of a nationally important rail, road and waterway network, Hämeenlinna is a traditional, vibrant educational and cultural city with a population of 67,800. The city is named for Häme castle, which dates back to the 1200s. Hämeenlinna was granted city rights by the Swedish Governor General of Finland, Count Per Brahe in 1639, when Finland was part of the Swedish realm. Popular leisure activities include sports, theater and music. The composer Jean Sibelius was born in Hämeenlinna in 1865.

Luleå Mill

Luleå is a good city to live in and one that is constantly growing. Near the vibrant city center, the archipelago and countryside await you at your doorstep. Luleå is a real cultural and sports-minded city, and if you are interested in sports you can watch top-class ice hockey and basketball. Luleå is also home to Sweden's most northernmost university, “Luleå University of Technology” (LTU), and Tekniikans Hus.

Interesting info

  • Between 2000 and 2015, Blast Furnace 3 in Luleå produced 31.5 million tonnes of pig iron (crude iron). That's the weight of a railroad that goes 8 times around the world!
  • Near the western guarded entrance you can find SSAB's own sports facility "The Wellness Center." where all SSAB employees can work out for free. The Wellness Center offers a modern gym with classes in areas such as spinning and muscle pump. In addition, a gymnasium, a bowling alley, and a tennis court are available.

 

Mobile, Alabama, US

Interesting info

  • The Mobile steel mill was built in 2001 and SSAB began operating there in 2008
  • The Mobile facility is one of Alabama's largest steel scrap recyclers, consuming approximately 1.6 million tons of scrap metal per year.
  • Through a unique recycling program at the Mobile facility, more than five million scrap tires have been saved from landfills and used in our steelmaking process.

Mobile Mill

Located in southwest Alabama, Mobile is this one of the oldest cities in the U.S. Nearly 600,000 residents live in the metropolitan area. Mobile's strategic location and tremendous infrastructure; two interstate systems, two airports, proximity to the Gulf of Mexico (31 miles) and five major railroads; make it a center for business. Its superb quality of life, diverse cultural and recreational activities, low cost of living, close distance to the beach and the temperate climate attract many newcomers and visitors every year.

Montpelier Mill

Located in east central Iowa along the picturesque banks of the Mississippi River, Muscatine is a city rich with history and a business sense. With a population of 23,000, it is an easy half-day drive from Minneapolis, Omaha and Indianapolis, just hours from Des Moines or Chicago. Whether it’s a stroll through its arboretum or a visit to the zoo, residents and visitors will find Muscatine offers a wide range of amenities and services that significantly enhance the area’s quality of life.

Also nearby, the Quad Cities area, with a combined population of nearly 425,000, brings visitors all the excitement of a big city with the hospitality of a small town. The region is comprised of the riverfront cities of Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa, and Moline and Rock Island, Illinois. The Quad Cities also offer a wealth of recreational venues, from a turn of the century baseball field to a 12,000-seat arena for live music and sports.

Interesting info

  • SSAB began operating in Iowa in 1997
  • The Montpelier facility is one of Iowa’s largest steel scrap recyclers, consuming approximately 1.4 million tons of scrap metal per year.
  • In 2010, SSAB Iowa opened a new 25,000-square-foot building for research and development adjacent to the steel mill. The R&D facility has some of the most cutting edge testing, simulation and metallographic equipment in the world.

 

Oxelösund, Sweden

What We Do

  • Product end uses: Recycling components, quarries, mining equipment, lifting equipment
  • The mill in Oxelösund is the first in the green transition of SSAB’s entire Nordic production system. An estimated SEK 6.2 billion is being invested in Oxelösund to replace the blast furnaces with an electric arc furnace and associated raw material handling. The aim is for the new production system to be up and running towards the end of 2026.

Interesting Facts

  • Oxelösund claims a long tradition of iron and steel production. The first ironworks for the manufacture of pig iron was built in 1914-1917.
  • Two of Sweden’s three blast furnaces are in Oxelösund and can together produce more than 5,000 tons of pig iron per day.
  • Oxelösund is Sweden’s only integrated steelworks – from iron ore to finished steel products. Size of the production site is twice as big as Monaco.

 

Oxelösund Mill

Oxelösund lies by the sea on the east coast of Sweden with a beautiful archipelago right next to the town. SSAB is one of the largest employers in the region and plays a major role in the business community. SSAB’s operations in Oxelösund are integrated and include both metallurgy and steel plate production.

Raahe Mill

Raahe has a population of around 25,000 and is located on the coast of the Gulf of Ostrobothnia some 600 km from Helsinki, the Finnish capital, and a drive of 75 kilometers from Oulu Airport. Raahe was founded in 1649 and the Old Town is one of the best preserved wooden towns in Finland, and a vibrant part of the city. The Port of Raahe operates all year round and is one of the busiest ports in Finland.

Interesting info

  • Rautaruukki Steelworks was established in the early 1960s. The first blast furnace was completed and iron production began in 1964. A hot strip mill was completed in 1971.
  • The Raahe site is huge: around 500 hectares with around 40 km of roads, more than 30 km of railroad track, including its own train and locomotive drivers, as well as its own harbor, where some 500 vessels call each year.
