In 2002, SSAB, together with the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH in Stockholm, set out to develop a groundbreaking color coating that would bring major environmental changes to the building industry. Whereas other color coatings commonly used in the building industry are made from petroleum-based chemicals, SSAB’s patented bio-based color coating, found on most GreenCoat® products, uses a substantial portion of Swedish rapeseed oil instead of fossil oil.
As opposed to conventional coating formulas, the bio-based solvent becomes a permanent part of the final coating, making for a healthier environment and reducing the release of harmful substances into the air.
It is safe to handle, suitable for outdoor and indoor use, is chromate free according to REACH regulations and has less impact on the environment than other coatings. Furthermore, this patented Bio-based Technology (BT) coating not only offers an environmental advantage, but also improved performance for a longer product life.
